SUNDAY SHOPPING

STROLL AND SHOP, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK

Strolling. Shopping. Experiencing Hamburg. Four times a year you can do that on Sunday, too. Hamburg lovers can use the seventh day of the week for shopping and enjoy spending time in central Hamburg in a relaxed atmosphere.

Not only does City Management Hamburg create the backing program for the special shopping days, it also handles the marketing and media work for the events.

We go with art and culture for the shopping Sundays. We create themed occasions and offer extra shopping time when it is needed, naturally taking into account Hamburg’s statutory regulations on business hours.

CHRISTMAS PARADE

SIMPLY MAGICAL! WITH SANTA, ELVES, AND ALL THEIR FRIENDS THROUGH CENTRAL HAMBURG

PARADE TIMES

The parade begins twice a day at 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in front of Saturn on Mönckebergstrasse on all four Saturdays in Advent.

Few things are more beautiful than the heart of the Hanseatic city at Christmas time. When the aroma of freshly roasted almonds and bratwurst wafts over Rathausmarkt, Christmas is right around the corner.

While the display windows are resplendent with holiday decorations, shops, passages, and department stores inspire the visitor with unique gift ideas. The Hamburg Christmas parade held on all four Saturdays in Advent has long since become a tradition as well. The colorful, joyous procession through the city center is an experience for young and old alike. Santas, elves, reindeer, and lavishly decorated floats travel from Mönckebergstrasse to Jungfernstieg. It all starts at Saturn.

FAIRYTALE SHIPS

MAGIC FAIRYTALE WORLDS

There is a tradition behind this: For over 35 years, the fairytale ships on the Binnenalster lake have been part of the scene. With them we are proud to have created a Christmas highlight for the whole family. For many people, our fairytale ships are a good reason to visit the Hanseatic city before Christmas. Floating ambassadors of Hamburg, our fairytale ships reached a record of 30,000 people in 2019.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE FAIRYTALE SHIPS WERE NOT AVAILABLE IN 2022, BUT WE ARE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE THIS TRADITION IN 2023.

CAFE SHIP SUSEBEK

A Very Special Coffee Break

Take a break from Christmas shopping to have a bite to eat and relax: The cafe ship invites you to sample holiday treats, coffee, and cake. While the little guests can have fun on the fairytale ship, parents can relax with a view of Jungfernstieg with its holiday decorations and the Alster lake Christmas tree.

AMMERSBEK

Ship of Transformation

On the dream ship Ammersbek, professional makeup artists are waiting for little guests and fans of bright colors. Within a few minutes, children are transformed into snow kings, ice princesses, or Christmas reindeer. The makeup artists use Kryolan face paints that do not irritate the skin. The play area on board gives children a lot of space to slip into their new role and let their imagination run free.

BAKING SHIPS SASELBEK & SIELBEK

All Hands to the Christmas Galley!

Great fun for little bakers: Aboard the Saselbek and Sielbek, children 3 years old and older can bake and decorate Christmas cookies themselves. In addition to the tasty cookies, kids can also take their own DAT BACKHUS apron and baker’s hat home with them. The Hamburg baking brand has made sure that the Christmas baking tradition is not lost in 2022. For 13 years it has supported Hamburg fairytale ships with two baking ships. This year, too, the holding fee of 2 euros ensures that this tradition will continue. Every year little baking pros turn out over 100,000 cookies and more than 10,000 Christmas trees from curd cheese dough. Five thousand kilograms (over 11,000 pounds) of dough, sugar, and edible decorations are processed. Strange but true: Placed end to end, the cookies would be 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) in length and could almost circle the Binnenalster lake twice.

SCULPTURE EXHIBITION “ARRIVED”

SPECTACULAR APE SCULPTURES ON MÖNCKEBERGSTRASSE

In July 2022, City Management Hamburg in cooperation with the international art exhibition NordArt realized a unique art experience.

Twelve gorilla sculptures by the artist Liu Ruowang, one of China’s leading contemporary artists, were on display from July 3 to 17 on Mönckebergstrasse, which was closed to bus traffic. Standing 3.5 meters (11 feet) high and weighing 800 kg (1,764 pounds) each, the figures of the exhibition inspired not only Hamburg residents.

The goal was to allow people to experience central Hamburg as a meeting place. The installation symbolized the need for social cohesion and enticed the viewer to adopt different perspectives. Many visitors were inspired to think about things in new ways and even preserved themselves for posterity on photos that went around the world.

BUS PARKING IN THE CHRISTMAS SEASON

MORE SPACE FOR BUSES
